Trip Through North Borneo 1907

Opening with a train journey, the film shows views from the train as it passes through a village and crosses a bridge. The camera is next on a boat, showing rapids, the jungle, locals on a raft and members of the expedition fording the stream. This is followed by scenes of the local industries. Locals quarry for manganese ore, gather rubber from a tree (watched by Europeans) and pick and sort tobacco leaves from the fields. Further scenes reveal locals at a trading post and performing for the camera. Next, Chinese convicts collect their food, before a sequence showing a European supervising two locals as they chop a sago palm tree. Once felled, the trunk is sawed off and buffaloes (ridden by locals) haul the logs off screen. Local boys take part in a swimming race - diving off a gangway, watched by a European figure rowing alongside - before the film concludes with further shots of the buffaloes, driven into, and crossing, the water.

My father, IJsbrand Rogge, explored Borneo (Kalimantan) in 1915 in the interior behind Pontianak for diamond and goldfields. He befriended local dignitaries, lodged an expedition and found a number of mines. Finally he took coconut shells of diamonds home to his house in Bogor..

From an almost 100 years old travelogue film, showing native arts, wrestling, music, weaving. Quite unique albeit the poor quality.

In Borneo island of Indonesia, central Kalimantan Province was borne on 1957. The only old movie, has been found about the province in the early time. This was converted from a very old film tape. Nowadays, wel call the province's name is Central Kalimantan. It's capital name is Palangka Raya or Palangkaraya.

My favorite song by The Radio Dept. plus video footage taken from an old documentary about the Central Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, Indonesia

The documentary describes a process wherein the Dayak communities in Nanga Mahap, Sekadau District of Indonesia get control and manage their territories and succeed in stopping the expansion of palm oil plantations. Participatory mapping and spatial planning were used to build new consensus between the communities and the local government at village and sub-District and District level. The new consensus was built after the communities gained a clearer understanding on the impact of the industrial palm oil plantations on land tenure and on the cultural, economic and ecological sustainability of their villages.

From the Ring of Fire documentary, filmed by two brothers who spent over ten years traveling around Indonesia in the 1970's

For a special Tribes of Borneo programme, the 101 East team spent several weeks travelling across the island to film with different tribes and hear their stories.

Deep in the remaining old growth forests of Borneo, the Setulang Dayak village guards its forest with deep commitment. To date, the village's traditional law of Tana Olen (forbidden forest), withstands increasing pressure from encroaching logging industries. Now as rapid development rolls in, the village is trying to secure sustainable and forest-friendly future, including a eco-tourism venture and carbon credits.

 DAYAK KENYAH

In a journey to central Borneo, visiting with Iban tribesmen and handling their collection of human heads

In Pagan Kadazan, headhunting used to be a revered custom. In those days skulls were significant not only religiously but also socially. Skulls were presented as dowry to the bride, without which a man cannot get married. In Kadazan society, particularly that in Penampang region, the skulls are to be fed with blood in a ceremony called Magang. The pictures are related to the Magang ceremony in Monsopiad, Penampang. Unlike other cultures where the skulls are held communally, all the 42 skulls shown here were collected by just one man, Monsopiad, making him legendary in his time. Thank you.

The Airmen and the Headhunters premieres nationally on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings).
In 1944, as war raged across the globe, an incredible drama unfolded in the remote jungles of Borneo. A U.S. bomber was hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire, and as the plane went down, the surviving crew ejected and parachuted into the wilderness. Pursued by Japanese soldiers, they were taken in and protected by members of the Dayak tribe‹the so-called ³wild men of Borneo,²who were infamous for their grisly custom of hunting and smoking enemy heads. Months later, the airmen were found by an eccentric British Major, who arrived in the jungle to set up a guerilla army, and built a runway out of bamboo so rescue planes could pick up the stranded airmen. Harder to believe than a fictional Hollywood thriller, their true tale is one of courage, survival, and compassion from the most unlikely sources. Based on the book of the same title by Judith Heimann and featuring exclusive testimonies fr
